CATIA V5: Saving a File in an Applications Non Native Format

Many different applications typically own their own file format. In the majority of cases, application developers allow users to also save their files in different formats, typically in ISO Standard formats.

For example, Dassault Systemes  CATIA V5 CAD Application has a native part file format of .CATPart, but the application allows users to save the part as a .STEP file format, an ISO 10303 standard allowing exchange of CAD data using a common file type. Most, if not all, other CAD packages are developed to read this file type too.

One of the more common questions received from users about applications is whether or not they can save in a particular file format. Although this blog post does not outline the formats each and every application can save in, it sure does highlight how a user can easily determine what format their application of choice can save in.

Below find images showing you how you can save a file in another format using File > Save-as, Export, or similar. We will have a look at Microsoft Office, SOLIDWORKS, CATIA V5, CATIA V6 and Midas NFX.
