  • Inheriting Surface Colours of Surface Based Features in 3DEXPERIENCE

Within 3DEXPERIENCE, it is possible to allow solid-based features to inherit the colours of the surface-based features used to create them. For example, if a pink surface is sewn onto a grey solid body, the part body can be set to be unaffected and remain grey. Alternatively, the part body can be set to inherit the colour of the surface and become pink. The default behaviour of 3DEXPERIENCE in this respect can be set within Preferences...
  • CATIA V5 to 3DEXPERIENCE Transition: Creating a Revision from Saved As Geometry

When using CATIA V5, the 'Save As' option can be used for creating a copy of an object which can then be used independently from the original file, often to evaluate different options during the development process. Sometimes, it is desirable to use one of these 'saved as' objects as the next new revision of the original product. 1) Search for both parts in 3DEXPERIENCE...
  • CATIA V5 to 3DEXPERIENCE Transition: Save As Function For Duplication

When using CATIA V5, the 'Save As' option can be used for creating a copy of an object which can then be used independently from the original file, often to evaluate different options during the development process. Sometimes, it is desirable to use one of these 'saved as' objects as the next new revision of the original product. In 3DEXPERIENCE, the 'Save As' option is available in the “Save with Options…” drop-down menu...
  • New Option to ‘Hard Metal Machining’ in 3DEXPERIENCE 2017x

Development of ‘Hard Metal Machining’ is continuing at a pace at Dassault Systemes, with the introduction of a new option for ‘Profile Contouring’. In versions before 3DEXPERIENCE R2017x, the option to select multiple radial cuts with a ‘concentric’ tool path style (used for Hard Metal cutting) was present but the user had to juggle the number of cuts required along with the depth of the radial cuts to make it clear the area required...
  • Changes In Aerospace Development Process Trends

In addition to knowledge management, collaboration is another key aspect of today’s engineering world. Due to the aforementioned more complex and diverse engineering projects, the classic waterfall type of information flow is inadequate to successfully complete design projects within ever stricter time and resource constraints.....
  • Does the 3DEXPERIENCE platform beat BREXIT?

The media like throwing logs on the fire of a good story and the supposed uncertainty of business life after BREXIT will become enflamed as more logs than most are thrown at as we, yes you and me, work our way through the next couple of years. Just the other week I was at the UK Intelligent Engineering Forum (which I had the dubious pleasure of organising) with more than a few friends, colleagues and partners...
  • How to Engrave Your CATIA V5 Model

One of the most commonly asked questions by trainees on one of our CATIA V5 Fundamentals courses is “How do I put engraving on my model?” By this, they usually mean adding text in the form of a pad (emboss) or pocket (deboss) to permanently identify the part. A simple alpha-numeric text string on a flat surface either raised or embedded by a millimetre or so will suffice. CATIA V5 does not have this function built in as a directly available modelling feature....
  • STL (STereoLithography) file and CATIA V5/3DEXPERIENCE

A Stereo Lithography (STL) file is a standard file format created by 3D Systems, USA. It also goes by other nick names of Standard Triangle Language or similarly Standard Tessellation Language. It is a very popular file format related to additive manufacturing [http://www.intrinsys.com/blog/2016/is-it-time-to-consider-additive-manufacturing], or 3D scanning and/or printing as it may be more commonly known...
  • Mozilla Firefox removes support for NPAPI Applet (Technology used by Java Applets)

Mozilla have ended support for NPAPI Applets in their Firefox browser. The NPAPI Applet is a technology used by Java, thus Mozilla are effectively ending support for Java applets. This change took place in Firefox update 53 (scheduled on 18th April 2017) and will carry forward into later releases. (The change will also affect Firefox ESR at the 45.9 and 52.1 releases).
  • Invisible Governance – The Demise of Meetings?

Diaries of Managers; whether that be people, processes or projects are often clogged with back-to-back meetings. In fact, if you came from another planet you might surmise the Manager’s purpose for living, their ‘raison d'être’ is to attend meetings. When a meeting lacks purpose, is set up and managed poorly resulting in very little positive action, or is high jacked by personal agendas, it is not difficult to see why some might perceive meetings as an unproductive activity and one to avoid at all costs. The key point being… bad meetings result in bad decisions.....
